“Invisalign or metal braces?” is one of the most frequent questions in orthodontic consultations. The only honest answer you can give without seeing the specific case is: it depends. Here is what you need to understand before choosing.
When Invisalign is a good choice
- Mild to moderate crowding (up to 6 mm)
- Spaces between teeth (diastemata)
- Orthodontic relapse (cases that had braces before)
- Adult patients with high aesthetic requirements in professional life
- Disciplined patient — must be worn 20–22 hours a day
When fixed braces are better
- Severe crowding (over 6 mm)
- Angle Class III with skeletal anomalies
- Complex root movements (extreme root torque)
- Teen patients who would not wear Invisalign consistently
- Limited budget (metal braces cost 30–50% less)
Myths that are not true
Myth 1: “Invisalign is always faster”
No. In complex cases Invisalign can be 6–12 months slower because root movements are achieved more gradually. In mild cases it is similar or slightly faster.
Myth 2: “Metal braces are painful”
Both cause sensitivity in the first 3–5 days after each activation. Invisalign is not noticeably more comfortable — each new aligner produces the same pressure on the teeth.
Myth 3: “Invisalign is invisible”
Almost — they are not 100% transparent. With dental loupes you can spot them. They are dramatically less visible than metal braces, but not “invisible.”
